Raising day of CIJW School celebrated

GUWAHATI, May 1 - The elite Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School, Vairengte, celebrated its 49th raising day with a number of events today. The celebration had commenced from April 28.

Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (retired), Governor of Mizoram, attended the celebrations. The Governor congratulated Maj Gen MS Ghura, Commandant, and the CIJW team on the occasion of the raising day and complimented the school for its yeoman�s service to the nation.

During his visit, the Governor was also shown various state-of-the-art training facilities and infrastructure available in the school for conduct of contemporary counter-terrorism training. Several military and civil dignitaries, including NS Jamwal, IG, BSF (Cachar), also attended the celebrations.

The CIJW School was founded in 1967 by Lt Col (later Lt General) Mathew Thomas as an ad hoc jungle training school at Mynkre near Shillong. In September 1968, the school was rechristened the Eastern Command Counter Insurgency Training School and on May 1, 1970, it was relocated to its present site at Vairengte (Mizoram) as the CIJW School. The school participated in the 1971 Indo-Pak War with honours.

Over the years, the school has evolved into a unique world-class institution with state-of-the-art infrastructure and training facilities for imparting counter-terrorism training to combatants of the Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces, paramilitary forces and State Police. The school also boasts of a global imprint with soldiers and contingents of more than 48 countries undergoing regular training here. Most of these countries today are actively involved in counter-terrorism operations in their respective homelands and have benefited from their exposure to the specialised tactical training in the CIJW School.

The raising day celebrations included cultural and ceremonial functions followed by a special address by the Commandant, Maj Gen MS Ghura, to the staff. The Commandant commended the high achievers of the school and gifted sports equipment to the local sports club.
