Rainwater harvesting at SOS Children�s Village

GUWAHATI, March 30 � To contribute to the water conservation efforts of the world community, the SOS Children�s Village, Guwahati and Coca-Cola India today announced a rainwater harvesting project at the village. The project was launched by JR Phukan, director, area operations, North East and Siliguri, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd covering a total area of over 33,600 square metres, the project on completion, will create annual groundwater recharge potential of 14,595 cubic metres (14,595,000 litres) of water and ensure sustainable water resources for over 250 residents of the village and communities around.

It needs to be mentioned here that such rainwater harvesting projects in partnership will cover 39 SOS locations spread across the country.

Rakesh Jinsi, secretary general, SOS Children�s Villages of India, said, �The project upon completion, by recharging the groundwater, would help in environmental re-building and in the long term ensure better availability of water. Through this, our children will become aware of the importance of water/environment conservation and grow up into being the advocacy ambassadors for the cause of water conservation.�

Speaking on the occasion, JR Phukan said that water conservation and environment management today required a participative and collaborative approach. �Each stakeholder in the society must contribute to the best of his ability for sustainability of the earth�s resources. I am thankful to SOS Children�s Villages of India for coming together with us to start this nationwide project of rainwater harvesting and I look forward to a speedy completion of the project work,� he said.
