By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 11 Flash flood caused by a shower of medium intensity, measuring 38 mm at Khanapara and 14.5 mm at Borjhar Airport in a span of 24 hours since Friday 8-30 am, upset normal life in many parts of the city.

Several of the city localities were under knee-deep to waist-deep water for hours. Water level in some localities of the Panjabari area is rising with the passage of the time. The development underlined once again the need for a new approach to solve the citys flash flood problem once for all.

The areas which were inundated by the storm water include a vast area on both sides of the RG Baruah Roadbetween Commerce College and Rajdhani Nursery, a vast area of Gandhibasti and Natun Sarania, Pub Sarania main road and several of its bye lanes, Rajgarh Road bye lanes, a vast area on the GS Road like Lachit Nagar, Sree Nagar and Tarun Nagar, Chirstian Basti and Ganeshguri Chariali.

Parts of the GNB Road, parts of the ML Nehru Road, parts of the Zoo-Narengi Road, Ambikagiri Nagar, Kumarpara, Chatribari part of the Dinesh Goswami/AT Road ( in front of the Himatsingka Petrol Pump), Chatribari Road near the Himatsingka Petrol Pump, FA Road-Dinesh Goswami Road juncture at Machkhowa were also submerged by the storm water, among others.

However, the flash flood condition in Nabin Nagar and Anil Nagar areas was reported to be the worst. Many families of the Anil Nagar area had to get themselves evacuated to safer areas. Both the areas, particularly Anil Nagar area, have been facing water logging for about one week now.

The flash flood problem, which has become a regular phenomenon for the residents of Anil Nagar for the past about two decades, has compelled some families of the area to shift to other areas permanently. Some of the families of the area have also made it a habit of spending the rainy season in rented houses in other areas.

The Aircel authorities provided the residents of this area a rubber boat about two months back for their transportation during the rainy days. However, it is alleged that due to absence of a proper management system it is of no use for many of the residents of the area.
