Rainless condition leads to rise in temperature

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 22 A rainless condition for a prolonged period has led to rise in the atmospheric temperature in the city. The situation in other parts of the State is also not much different. According to Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) sources here, a similar situation was witnessed in the end part of March last year, too.

However, Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) sources here said that rain or thundershower activities are expected over Arunachal Pradesh and north-eastern part of Assam during the next 24 hours under the influence of trough that is found lying along the longitude 87 degree East and latitude 21 degree North.

There is also a warning issued by the RMC suggesting that isolated thunder squall with a wind speed of 50 km per hour may occur over Assam during next 24 hours. It has also forecast possibility of light rain over Guwahati and its adjacent areas during next 24 hours.

The city today recorded a maximum (day) temperature of 35.1 degree Celsius (C) and a minimum (night) temperature of 22.3 degree C, with Dibrugarh recording a maximum temperature of 28.6 degree C and a minimum temperature of 20 degree C and Tezpur recording a maximum temperature of 29.6 degree C and a minimum temperature of 21.1 degree C.

During the day, Silchar recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degree C and a minimum temperature of 20.3 degree C, while Jorhat recorded a maximum temperature of 24 degree C and a minimum temperature of 19.3 degree C and Dhubri recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degree C and a minimum temperature of 23 degree C.

On March 20 and 21 this year, the day temperature rose to 37 degree C, against the normal of 31 degree C. Last year, day temperature rose to 37 degree C on March 26, against the normal of 31 degree C.

But following rainfall activities, day temperature gradually climbed down during the end part of March last year, said the RMC sources. Explaining further, they said that the city recorded a day temperature of 33 degree C on March 27, 31 degree C on March 28, 30 degree C on March 29 and 30 and 27 degree C on March 31, against a normal of 31 degree C for the period. The city recorded a rainfall of 4 mm on March 27, 1.1 mm on March 28, 8.2 mm on March 30 and 27.5 mm on March 31 last year. But this year, the city recorded a rainfall of only 1.1 mm on March 16 and thereafter it recorded no more rainfall so far, said RMC sources.

When asked to explain why there was no norwester (locally known as bordoichila) this year, sources said that norwesters are produced by severe local convective condition and high humidity is one of the important factors contributing to their development.
