Rain, landslides batter Sikkim

GANGTOK, Aug 6 - Incessant rainfall has caused landslides and swelling of rivers, damaging property at many places in Sikkim. The Ipca Laboratories at Mazhitar in South Sikkim was damaged in a landslide, while the road connecting the DANS energy power station to Jorethang-Namchi has been washed away.

According to the MET department, thunderstorm, lightning, moderate rain and gusty wind are very likely over East and South districts. Landslides have also occurred at the NHPC dam at Dikchu.

Five families have been evacuated at Sawney under West Pendam constituency. In the past few days, there have been multiple landslides at Shelay Ward Tumin GPU, Khesay Ward, Legship and South Kambal GPU.

The landslide at Legship in West Sikkim has damaged a portion of the historic Kirateswar Shiva temple, which is also threatened by the rising water level of the Rangit river.
