Rain-induced landslides damage several houses

GUWAHATI, June 19 - A woman sustained injuries and several houses were partially damaged in landslides triggered by heavy rains at places like Fatasil Ambari, Santipur, Maligaon and Nilachal Hills on Thursday night.

A police source said that Kiran Das of Kailashpur, Fatasil Ambari sustained injuries after a wall of her house collapsed while she was preparing dinner at 8.30 pm.

�A guard wall collapsed on PNGB Road at Santipur, while several houses were damaged at Maligaon due to landslides. In another incident, a huge stone rolled down the hill on to the road leading up to the Kamakhya Temple. No causalities were reported in these incidents,� the source added.

Moreover, the hour-long heavy shower on Thursday evening caused waterlogging in various parts of the city. Waterlogging was witnessed mainly at Chandmari, Rajgarh, Ulubari, Ambari, Hatigaon and Beltola.

It may be recalled that on May 26, a house was partially damaged at Bishnunagar in Panjabari area due to a landslide triggered by incessant rains.

Fearing calamities like landslide, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu had recently imposed a blanket ban on earth-cutting and earth-filling activities on hilly terrain, water-bodies and low-lying areas of the district.
