Railways need separate safety board, says minister

By The Assam Tribune

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS): Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has said the railways need a separate safety board on the lines of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to prevent accidents.

"It is not a policy yet, but we have to think of a separate railway safety board. I am not saying that this is final. But we have to think of it on the lines of DGCA, so that it can tell us what can be done to prevent such accidents," said Trivedi said Sunday night.

Trivedi's view on a separate railway safety board came within hours after the engine and six coaches of the Bangalore-bound Guwahati-Bangalore Express derailed and were hit by a passenger train passing on the adjacent tracks in West Bengal's Malda district on Sunday. One person was killed and 35 were injured in that accident.

Four coaches of the Azimganj-Malda Town passenger train were also derailed in the collision near Jamirghata station.
