Rail Roko stir for ST status

By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, July 30 - Demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the six communities, namely Tai Ahom, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi, Chutia and the Tea tribes of Assam, activists of these communities resorted to a Rail Roko programme at Panitola, Tinsukia detaining the Howrah-bound Kamrup Express for more than 2 hours (from 7 to 9 PM) on Tuesday.

The blockade was lifted at the request of the magistrate on behalf of the Tinsukia district administration. The protesters stated that both the Central and the State Government have betrayed them by giving repeated assurances but in reality, till now, they have not been given the Scheduled Tribe status.

The protesters further warned that the ST status should be given before 2016, else they would resort to such massive agitations that the entire State would be under turmoil and for that the Government would be responsible.
