Raids on smokeless tobacco product sales

GUWAHATI, June 5 � The Food Safety and Standard Officials of Kamrup Metropolitan district on Thursday conducted raids on smokeless tobacco product sales in various parts of the capital city.

In the city�s Ganeshguri point, the raid was led by Samiran Baruah, Food Safety Officer cum Nodal Officer, Tobacco Control Cell, Kamrup (Metro). Baruah informed that products were seized under the legal provisions.

�During the drive we collected the samples of smokeless tobacco products and seized the said products from a shop keeper under the provision of the Assam Health (Prohibition of Manufacturing, Advertisement, Trade, Storage, Distribution, sale and consumption of zarda, gutkha, panmasala etc., containing tobacco and /or Nicotin) Act, 2013 and send it for analysis at the State Public Health Laboratory for confirmation,� said Baruah.

Baruah said that during the drive against various small pan shop owners at Ganeshguri it was found that some of the smokeless tobacco products were coming from outside the State.

Senior Food Safety Officer Tarun Das was present during the special drive. In another drive at Narengi and Bamunimaidam Food Safety Officer Munin Bhuyan seized smokeless tobacco of huge amount.

The department is preparing for legal action against the offenders under the Act.
