Rahul to tour State from today

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Feb 14 - Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah formally kicking off their partys election campaign in Assam, it is now the turn of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to tour the State. He will take part in a padayatra from Rangghar.

Gandhi will arrive in Assam on a two-day tour and address party workers, a public rally and hold interactions with tea garden leaders.

According to AICC sources, Gandhi will first address a booth workers meeting at Gohpur on Monday morning, followed by a Mahila Sangathan meeting at Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district. He will then address a public meeting at Jorhat, which will be followed by a meeting with tea garden community leaders at Sivasagar.

Late in the afternoon, he will address the youth Congress and NSUI elected representatives also in Sivasagar.

After a night halt, on Tuesday he will hold an interaction with civil society leaders of Upper Assam at Sivasagar.

He will then hold a padayatra from Rangghar Tiniali and conclude it with a meeting at Durbar Field.

The Congress decision to take Rahul Gandhi to Upper Assam is significant given the threat the party faces from BJP in Lakhimpur and Sivasagar.

The Congress is pinning its hope on Rahul Gandhi to galvanise the party and step up the poll campaign. The Congress is desperate to reverse its Lok Sabha poll fortunes in the ensuing State Assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi had toured Hajo on December 10, when a lot of controversy was generated over his visit to a Sattra.
