Rahul to be consulted on Kharge report

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 2 The AICC is likely to take a call on the fate of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi after vice president Rahul Gandhi returns to the country from abroad tomorrow, a top leader of the party said.

Amidst reports that the Chief Minister may be on his way out, sources clarified that Mallikarjun Kharges report to Congress president Sonia Gandhi would need further discussion and Rahul Gandhi would be consulted before a final decision is taken.

However, the party seems to be in no hurry to take a decision, as the Congress president has been holding consultations with top leaders. What has rattled the rebels is the fact that the Chief Minister enjoys a good rapport with Rahul Gandhi and the vice president might come to his rescue.

The disgruntled MLAs claim that over 50 MLAs have opted for a change of leadership in Assam, while Gogois camp also claims that a large number of MLAs support the Chief Minister.

Reports suggested that Kharge has reported that 56 of the 78 party MLAs are against Gogois continuation.

Amidst the conflicting claims, the Chief Minister has been hinting at the possibility of reshuffling his Council of Ministers and possibly appoint a deputy chief minister.

Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma rushed to Delhi yesterday and meet political adviser to the Congress president, Ahmed Patel.

Sources said that in case the party high command decides to drop Gogoi, then the hunt would begin for his replacement. As of now, PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sarma are the frontrunners.
