GUWAHATI, Feb 24 - Around one lakh Congress workers are expected to gather in the city for the booth workers mega rally on February 26, which will be addressed by party president Rahul Gandhi.
Senior Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) sources said that workers from all the 26,000 booth committees of the party in Assam will attend the rally at the Veterinary College ground, Khanapara.
Gandhi will address the meeting at 1 pm on that day.
The party had earlier planned to hold a rally of the joint opposition. However, the idea was shelved later.
While we were keen to hold a joint opposition rally on that day and there was already an announcement in that regard, we cancelled the plan following the Pulwama incident. Our party believes that now is not the time to engage in electioneering and partisan politics when so many of our brave soldiers have sacrificed their lives. So, instead of a public rally of opposition parties, we will be holding the meeting for our own booth-level workers. We expect around one lakh party workers to attend the event, said an APCC office-bearer.
He added that Gandhi will arrive in the city on the morning of February 26.
After the booth workers meeting, Gandhi will attend a meeting of the North East Congress Coordination Committee at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra from 3.30 pm, followed by a meeting with all the district and block Congress committee presidents from across the North East at 5 pm at the same venue.
The Congress had managed to win only three of the 14 Lok Sabha seats from Assam in the 2014 general elections. This time, the party has set a target to secure at least 11 seats from the State.
The Lok Sabha polls are slated to be held in April-May.
