SIVASAGAR, Feb 11: Rahul Gandhi, former president of the INC and an MP, will visit historic Sivasagar town on February 14 and the Congress party workers are very upbeat over his visit.

“Indian National Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi will address a mammoth public meeting in Boarding Field, Sivasagar to tell the people here why they should not vote for the BJP in the next Assembly elections,” said Sivasagar District Congress president Sushanta Borgohain, yesterday. Manoranjan Konwar, secretary, Thowra LAC, Bijit Dutta, secretary, Sivasagar Congress, TN Pran, media coordinator, Rupom Gogoi (Youth Congress leader) and Rupok Bhuyan, while supervising the preparatory works to welcome the national leader in Boarding Field, said that the Congress will successfully retain their traditional citadel in Sivasagar and steer the pace of development which nose-dived during the past five years due to the failure of the BJP government.

The Congress leaders said that Rahul Gandhi will be greeted by over 20,000 Congress workers from different parts of the district. Meanwhile, Sivasagar District Congress has filed an FIR in Sivasagar PS against one Sanjeev Karmakar who, in a Facebook post maligned the image of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi allegedly grafting his photograph with a lewd women which has gone viral in the social media.

Sivasagar, of late, has come into the national limelight with the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the State BJP leaders frequent visits to prepare the groundworks on the eve of the ensuing Assembly elections, 2021. The Sivasagar and Nazira Assembly segments have long been under Congress control as Debabrat Saikia and late Pronob Gogoi returned from Nazira and Sivasagar LACs respectively for successive terms. Rajiv Gandhi’s visit is expected to boost the morale of the grassroot Congress workers here to give the ruling BJP a tough fight in the next elections. The sizeable minority population in the constituency will also be a deciding factor in the constituency which traditionally voted for the Congress since Left Front leader Promode Gogoi left the scene.

Meanwhile, eight names of leaders have surfaced seeking party candidature from Sivasagar LAC and those are – Kalyan Gogoi, Prasanta Gogoi, Subhamitra Gogoi, Bidyut Gogoi, Parama Gogoi, wife of former Minister Devananda Konwar Niva Konwar and the two sons of the former Speaker and MLA from the constituency Pronob Gogoi – Manjeer Gogoi and Prameer Gogoi. Bijit Gogoi, GS, District Congress, told this correspondent that it all depends on the High Command to assess the winnability of the individuals and decide whom to nominate.
