Rahul Gandhi likely to campaign in Manipur on March 20

IMPHAL, March 13 - AICC president Rahul Gandhi is expected to arrive here on March 20 for the Lok Sabha poll campaign, Congress sources said.

Though the proposed visit of the Congress president to the State has not been finalised yet, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) functionaries have started the necessary preparations.

Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi and Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam are expected to attend the meeting with AICC leaders for finalising the party candidates for the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, the ruling State BJP unit has also invited their national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for poll campaigns on March 30. The party is expecting the arrival of BJP president Amit Shah on April 9. Other Union ministers including Nirmala Sitharaman are also likely to attend the poll campaign in the State, according to party sources.

So far around 16 aspiring candidates, including some prominent politicians, are seeking the BJP ticket for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency. As many as 10 aspirants are vying the party ticket for the Outer constituency.

Meanwhile, seven candidates have applied for the Congress ticket in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency, while nine others are seeking the party ticket for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency.

Those who have applied for the Congress ticket in Outer Manipur constituency include Tongmang Haokip, W Lalkholam Hangshing, KS Ngaite, T Zangkhomang Haokip, Sword Vashum, John Manglianthang Zou and K James.

The contenders to the Congress ticket in Inner Manipur are former MLAs Dr Ng Bijoy, O Joy, I Hemochandra, sitting MP Dr T Meinya, former Chief Secretary O Nabakishore, N Bupendra, S Manaobi alias Khoiranthaba, K Saratchandra and M Bishwarjit.

Manipur will go to polls on April 11 and April 18.
