Raha-Chaparmukh-Kampur road: massive erosion leads to closure

By ANN Service

RAHA, Oct 26 - Vehicular movement was suspended from Friday on Raha- Chaparmukh-Kampur road by the administration following a massive erosion. The erosion caused by the confluence of the three rivers, namely Kolong, Kapili and Haria at Tinisuti, Garmari locality has brought a threat to the nearby areas.

According to locals of the area, the erosion by the rivers developed on the road two years back. The authorities concerned were informed about the erosion by the locals several times and they had urged the authorities to take necessary action. To our utter surprise, the authorities concerned did not pay any heed to our requests, as a result of which the road was closed today, a local of the area told this correspondent.

It is learnt that the erosion in the area became severe from last year and the people of that area had been demanding protection of this all-important road from the onslaught of the meeting point of the three rivers. But the Water Resource Department, PWD instead of taking any permanent measure, adopted some purely temporary steps when erosion began in some parts of the road. The vulnerable portions of the road also remained unattended by the departments concerned and they had not conducted any on-the-spot assessment of the erosion in the area. The departments also did not chalk out an action plan for its protection.

The aggrieved villagers alleged that their repeated pleas to officials of departments concerned and also to local MLA Dimbeswar Das to stop the erosion at this stretch, fell on deaf ears.

The unfortunate incident has brought about a lot of problems not only for the locals of the area but also for students, people of business community based at Chaparmukh. The people who visit Chaparmukh junction to board a train are also suffering a lot due to the closure of the road.

Meanwhile, PWD has identified one alternative road from Raha to Chaparmukh via Dighaliati to facilitate communication.
