Rafikul Hussain receives Amulya Kakati award

GUWAHATI, Feb 9 � Noted theatre personality and poet Rafikul Hussain today received the Swabhav Shilpi Amulya Kakati Memorial Award 2010, instituted by Students� Artistes� Writers� Welfare Trust and the All Guwahati Students� Union.

The award is given in the memory of versatile actor, director and playwright, Amulya Kakati who was one of the founder members of the trust.

The award consisted of a sculpture made by noted artiste Biren Singha, a gamocha, a cheleng chador and a cash amount.

After receiving the award from noted Assamese film actor Biju Phukan, Hussain said that he is happy to receive the award instituted in the memory of a person, who has been a source of inspiration to him.

�Though I briefly met him several times at the beginning of my career, Amulya Kakati�s work has always inspired me and it is a great honour to receive an award in his name,� he said. He also praised the students� body for honoring the artistes of the State.

A devoted theatre personality and a poet of repute, Hussain is associated with a theatre institution called Rangbhumi. As a popular playwright, his collection of full length plays Dhowa, Dewaki, Jalashay received an award from the Sahitya Sabha in 1996.

His poetry collections Sharabiddha Akash and Bishad Basanta were published in 1984 and 2009 respectively.

Recalling Amulya Kakati�s contribution to the world of theatre and cinema in Assam, Biju Phukan called him an institution by himself. �He had a very clear idea of what he wanted to portray in his work, and that clarity reflected in both his acting and the dialogues written by him,� said Phukan. Some of the films, in which Kakoti acted were, Rajanigandha, Meghamukti, Puja, Devi, Papori, Ei Desh Mur Desh, Ranga Nadi, Haladhiya Sorai Bao Dhan Khay.

The AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya while speaking on the occasion mentioned that the students� body would take more steps to honour the artistes and litterateurs of the State.

Famous artist and president of the Students� Artistes� Writers� Welfare Trust, Nilapawan Baruah was also present on the occasion.
