R-Day celebrated peacefully in Manipur

IMPHAL, Jan 26 (PTI): The 67th Republic Day celebrations passed off peacefully in Manipur in the wake of a boycott call by militant outfits as Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh urged people to work together for development.

The chief minister was addressing the public at the 67th Republic Day celebration held at 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground here after taking salute from contingents of security forces and Manipur police.

School children and cultural troupes also took part in the march past at Kangla, the old palace site.

Earlier, O Ibobi Singh hoisted the tri-colour at Kangla where the main function was held.

The Governor V Shanmuganathan in his message for the R-Day said that Manipur had been making progress towards development in several fields during the past few years and added that Act East policy of the Centre would bring more advancement in Manipur.

R-Day was also celebrated in others district head quarters and sub-divisional head quarters of the state.

Though the armed insurgent outfits operating in Manipur had called a total shut down and boycott of R-Day celebration in Manipur, the celebrations passed off peacefully, a top police official said.

He also said there was no major untoward incident except for some minor incidents like torching of gates erected for the Republic day celebration at remote Tamenglong district.
