Quit India Movement martyr Tilak Deka remembered

MORIGAON, Aug 29 - Swahid Tilak Deka, who sacrificed his life on August 28, 1942 during the Quit India Movement at Barapujia in Morigaon district was remembered at his birth place Charaibahi and his place of death at Barapujia.

After the clarion call from Mahatma Gandhi for the Quit India Movement in August 1942, Tilak Deka, then a 22-year-old youth, led the movement at Barapujia and faced the British Army on August 28. The British Army column led by Captain Finsh and Captain AN Dam ordered firing when Tilak Deka alerted the villagers by blowing a horn. Captain Finsh himself shot Tilak Deka who died on the spot at Barapujia.

This heroic story of the freedom struggle at Barapujia and several other villages of Morigaon district is still remembered.

At Charaibahi, people assembled in front of the statue of Tilak Deka and lit earthen lamps led by social worker Rajen Nath while the National Flag was hoisted by retired teacher Kamal Bordoloi.

At the Barapujia Swahid Samadhi Khetra, tributes were paid to the freedom fighter by local people led by senior citizen Ganesh Chandra Deka while the National Flag was hoisted by Beauty Deka, BDO (in-charge), Kopili Development Block, Morigaon.
