Quarter marathon on January 7

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - A quarter marathon run of 10 kilometres is being organised in five major cities of Assam from January 7 next to promote the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and with a noble initiative to build toilets in different locations of the State.

The event is being held with active support and co-operation from the Government of Assam in January-February.

The run will start from Guwahati on January 7 and will subsequently be held in Dibrugarh on January 14, Jorhat on January 21, Tezpur on January 28 and Silchar on February 4.

Apart from creating awareness and consciousness among the masses, the event will also act as a fundraiser for building public toilets around a chosen venue or its surrounding rural areas, besides providing toilets made out of bamboo for various tourist spots.

Announcing the plan, joint organisers of the event Leisure Sports Management, a frontrunner in promotion of sports and events nationally for over three decades and Guwahati-based NGO Tipkai said that both the Government of Assam and the Assam Athletics Association have decided to extend their full support in logistic and technical matters for the event.

In this connection a programme was held here recently where Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, popular actresses Barsha Rani Bishaya and Chairman of Jyoti Chitrabon Pabitra Margherita were present. Leisure Sports Management MD SS Dasgupta said the initiative, aimed at promoting hygiene and sanitation, has received overwhelming response from various quarters.
