Quarry blast-hit villagers submit memo

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, June 9 Residents of Salbari under Boitamari Revenue Circle in Bongaigaon district submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding the closure of quarries at the Silghagri hill adjacent to the village.

Since the high-intensity rock-blasts at the quarries have posed serious threat to houses, school buildings, temples, wells, fertile crop fields and the ecology of the villages near these quarries, hence the local residents have demanded that the concerned stop the quarries located near the villages.

The affected villagers in their memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner mentioned the survey report prepared by the Pollution Control Board in which the negative impact of these quarries had been pointed out.

Biswajit Pegu, the Deputy Commissioner, heard the grievances of the villagers patiently and assured them of a positive step, said Swapan Chakravarty, a farmer of Salbari.

The delegates submitted a copy of the memorandum to the Divisional Forest officer on Monday. They also visited Saranga Pani Sarma, SDO (Civil), North Salmara, who told the villagers to inform him immediately if any quarry blast occurs anew, Chakravarty said.
