Quarantine centres at IIT-G opposed

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 21 - NGO Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has expressed concern at the news of converting two guest houses of IIT Guwahati (IIT-G) into quarantine centres at a very short notice, causing problems to a number of occupants of the guest houses who were yet to be allotted proper accommodation.

The organisation stated that through this step, the government has put the lives of around 3,500 people in danger, especially because among the residents of IIT-G quarters are elderly people, children and persons with chronic illnesses.

SGBG further asked the government to continue with the night curfew for one more month and to impose Section 144 to manage lockdown effectively.

Effective quarantine facility is the need of the hour. At the same time caring for the health and wellbeing of the other citizens is also of paramount importance so that the infection does not spread further. We wonder why the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium is not converted into a quarantine centre like the Sarusajai stadium.

The government recently extended lockdown by another two weeks with further relaxations. Even curfew timing has been changed by one hour. It should not have happened because our daylight timing is different. We request the government to continue with the curfew for another month, SGBG president Krishno K Borooah said.

SGBG vice president Ajoy Dutta said, If the government decides to open schools from June, then they must implement some immediate steps to restrict spread of Covid-19 including complete sanitization of the school buildings, full sanitization measures for the students entering the school premises, adequate supply of handwash liquids, sanitizers, etc., at every school.

The NGO also advocated employing the even-odd formula for students attending classes to maintain social distancing and also to reduce traffic on road.
