GUWAHATI, Sept 9 � The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has directed all commercial, institutional and government establishments situated along the AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road to designate and arrange their own parking places within 30 days.
The civic body has issued a notice in this regard and added that failure to comply with the notice and the parking norms as envisaged under the Building Byelaws will entail action under the provisions of the GMC Act, 1971, and Building Byelaw leading to cancellation of trade licence and sealing of the premises.
�� hereby direct all the commercial/institutional/government establishments situated along the AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road, particularly from Bharalumukh point to Ulubari Point (via Judges� Field and Guwahati Club) and from the Bharalumukh point to Ulubari Point (via AT Road and Paltan Bazar) to designate and arrange their own parking places as per the provisions of the Building Byelaw within 30 days from the issue of this notice, so that the vehicles coming to these establishments do not use the AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road, particularly from the Bharalumukh point to Ulubari Point as parking place,� GMC Commissioner S Viswanathan said in the notice.
He added, �All the owners/rent holders of these establishments are directed to submit compliance report stating the exact numbers of cars/two- wheelers parking provided as per the provisions of the Building Byelaw along with photographs within seven days after expiry of the aforesaid period. Failure to comply with this notice and the parking norms as envisaged under the Building Byelaws will entail action under the provisions of the GMC Act, 1971, and Building Byelaw leading to cancellation of trade licence and sealing of the premises, etc.�
Viswanathan said that it has been observed that customers and visitors, besides owners of such establishments along these streets, park their vehicles along the AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road. However, a large number of these establishments do not have designated parking places required as mandated under Building Byelaw applicable for the city.
�� this unabated parking along the whole stretch of AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road, particularly from the Bharalumukh point to Ulubari, has considerably reduced the carrying capacity causing tremendous traffic jam... the situation has increased in alarming proportions posing a threat to human life and traffic movement during any disaster, medical emergency or any such situation,� he said.
The notice said that it has become necessary to declare the entire stretch of AT Road, GS Road, MG Road, Md Tayabullah Road and GNB Road as �No parking zone� except for the public vehicles on official duty and public transport system, which includes city bus, auto rickshaw, among others.
The GMC�s latest directive comes two days after MGVK Bhanu, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, had carried out an inspection of the entire stretch of GS Road from Khanapara to Bharalumukh, accompanied by senior officials including Kamrup Metro DC Dr M Angamuthu, GMC Commissioner S Viswanathan, SSP AP Tiwari, SP Traffic (City), and staff of the Water Resources Dept, PWD and GMDA.
Bhanu had directed SP Traffic to ensure that there�is no�parking�of private vehicles on the stretch and directed the PWD to make the footpaths free from vendors and also to construct railings along the footpaths. He had also announced that DC, GMC Commissioner, SSP and SP Traffic will visit various locations across the city every Sunday to review progress of the work.
