Pvt firm rendering yeoman service in keeping Tezpur clean

By Shambhu Boro

TEZPUR, Oct 12 - Radiant Skill and Environmental Solution Pvt Ltd has now become a boon for those who want that Tezpur should remain clean and green. The organisation, which came into being in 2013, has been rendering yeoman service in Tezpur town since 2018 with its motto green love, green thought, green life and with special focus on keeping Tezpur town garbage free. The organisation with 46 staff everyday collects wastes from 11, 230 households in 19 wards of the Tezpur town in 15 vehicles, takes it to the Marabharali disposal site and after segregating the wastes, converts the wet wastes to organic compost and recycles the dry one.

It is to be mentioned here that over 36 tonnes of wastes are generated daily in the Tezpur municipal area and to store these wastes, only 35 community bins are being used. As the number of community bins are few and distributed haphazardly without any planning, residents have no other alternative other than to deposit the wastes along the roadsides and in the open drains. The urban local body uses RCC bins and metallic containers to store the wastes and 132 workers are engaged to handle the waste management task.

It is however seen that the sweeping crew collects the wastes from roadsides and deposit them in the nearby community bins. To transfer the wastes, vehicles like tractor-trailers, mini trucks and dumper placers are being used, which every day collect the wastes and carry it to the final disposal site located on the bank of the Marabharali, about 4 km away from the town and the collected wastes are finally disposed of by simply dumping and landfilling processes. However, the conscious people here have expressed their concern over the process of open-air burning and the unscientific land filling of wastes, which not only causes air pollution but also contamination of the ground and surface water in the nearby localities.

Interacting with this correspondent, the executive director-cum-CEO of Radiant Environmental Solution Pvt. Ltd, Ashok Baruah said that as the door-to-door waste collection system had not been started till 2017 in the municipal area and being a responsible tax payer of the historic town, he felt that something different and beneficial should be done. Accordingly with the support of Dr Ajai Kalandhar, from IIT, Gwuahati and some positive minded people, I conducted a survey to comprehend the character of waste generation in the Tezpur city and its adjoining areas and finally started my mission of collecting wastes from every household in Tezpur town, which are then deposited at the Marabharali disposal site where I manage to turn it into profitable items. My team converts the wet wastes (segregated) to organic compost and recycles the dry one. We are managing all these with our self-finance and the minimum possible mechanism. We have been producing organic compost at a high cost of production but are facilitating the people at a minimum rate only in the greater interest of motivating the people towards an organic world. But the regrettable thing is that though the government or the district could do a lot in this regard, they are seen reluctant. Lakhs of rupees are allotted to the administration in the name of Swachh Bharat Mission and if at least, a minimum portion of it is spent in promoting our work, there would be a lot of good feedback.

Recently we organised a weeklong programme christened Swachhata Saptah 2020 in connection with Gandhi Jayanti which came to an end on October 8 last but the required support from the district administration and Municipality board was zero, he said adding that yet he is optimistic enough that with the support of the people who really love Tezpur, it will extend its helping hand which will go a long way towards keeping Tezpur clean and green.
