TEZPUR, Feb 2 They are educated and industrious youths leading a generation living in an economically tough world, who have stepped forward to steer in a green revolution in greater Puthimari area.
It needs to be mentioned that at a time when lakhs of youths have been reeling under the burning unemployment problems and following which many of them have gone astray, a section of the young and educated people of this greater area belonging to Sonitpur district, some 30 km away from Tezpur town and located on the bank of Gabharu rivers are no longer looking up to government jobs but are concentrating their energy on their barren lands to make it highly productive.
As land plays a pivotal role in this area in generating income repeated floods and droughts have not dented the spirits of the people who are game about experimenting with innovative techniques of cultivation and growing new varieties of flowers.
More than 30 educated youths including Gopal Mahatu, Harilal Ruhidas, Mohoram Ali, Dulal Mahatu, Lakhan Mahatu, Kailas Rai, Bilash Rai, Rama Mandal and Rinku Gupta in the area have been involved with flower cultivation for the last 15 years as the high-breed flowers like marigold, dahlia, chrysanthemum, poppy, etc. have high demand among the people as well as in the flower market.
Among the flower cultivators here, Dulal Mahatu while interacting with this reporter said that they are not only selling flowers in Sonitpur but all across the State.
The young educated boys of our area are greatly motivated by the huge returns coming from flower cultivation through which more than 25 families have been earning livelihood, said Jitu Nath, one of the members of a frontline NGO, Udayon who has been influencing these educated youths in the past times.
Expressing total dissatisfaction over the lackadaisical, attitude of agencies like the agricultural department and banks another farmer Rinku Gupta said that if they could avail adequate training on the flower cultivation and bank finance they could yield more. Though we approach our nearest banks seeking financial help we never get any response, rather showing many formalities they push us away. Still we are continuing with flower cultivation with our own capital as the business is helping us to survive in this economically tough world, he reiterated.
On the otherhand, the young farmers here have also cultivated vegetables like cabbage, cauliflowers, brinjal, potato in more than 20 hectares of land alongside rows of flower cultivation. Tough flower cultivation can help us through the whole year alongside if we plant some other profitable things like vegetables we can augment and our income.
Another successful farmer Bipul Rai said that they are hopeful that though authorities concerned neglect them yet they have succeeded in establishing an example of self sufficiency by cultivating their waste lands reflecting a bold income generating way in the area.
