Pune-based body institutes Bhupen Hazarika award

NEW DELHI, Aug 5 � In a touching move aimed at connecting distant Maharashtra with the North-east, a Pune-based organisation, Sarhad, has instituted Dr Bhupen Hazarika National Award. The first recipient of the award is noted filmmaker Jahnu Barua.

Sarhad, a 25-year-old organisation, said it has been making efforts to connect people from border areas to the mainstream Indian society. The organisation Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde as its chief patron. The Dada Saheb Phakle Award winner musical genius was instrumental in bringing the culture of North-east in the mainstream, it said.

The annual award comprises cash award of Rs 51,000, a trophy and a citation.
