Pulin Das, the pioneer

GUWAHATI, July 16 � Pulin Das, who died here today at the age of 96, was instrumental in setting up several State-level sports associations. A dedicated sports organiser and sportsperson, Das initiated in instituting the Assam Cricket Association, Assam Football Association, and Assam Badminton Association. He was the founder secretary of the Assam Cricket Association and guided the organisation for the betterment with solo effort.

He was a close aide of RG Baruah. Being the secretary of Gauhati Town Club, Das planned to start the Bordoloi Trophy. He was an cricket umpire, football referee, radio commentator and overall a good organiser. He also took the initiative to open the Guwahati Press Club and many other social organisations.

More importantly, he represented the State Ranji team in its maiden appearance in Shillong against United Province. Das was a regular member of India Club. He maintained a very disciplined life which had been an encouragement for the youngsters.

His death has been condoled by the Assam Cricket Association, Assam Football Association, Guwahati Sports Association, India Club Assam Table Tennis Association, Assam Badminton Association, Guwahati Press Club, Sports Journalists Association of Assam, Veteran Cricket Association of Assam and Sepak Takraw Association.
