Pul orders magisterial probe into Tawang incident

ITANAGAR, May 3 - Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul has ordered a magisterial inquiry into yesterday�s firing incident at Tawang that claimed two lives and seven other sustained bullet injuries.

The Chief Minister also announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased persons and Rs 2 lakh for those injured, and further assured all possible support and assistance from the government�s end.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, expressed deep sense of condolences on the loss of lives in the Tawang incident and prayed for early recovery of those injured.

Expressing his grief on the loss of lives in the �unfortunate� incident, State Governor JP Rajkhowa said, �Tawang is the pride of all Arunachalees and crown of Arunachal Tourism. The people of Tawang must rise above personal differences and problems.�

Stating that Arunachal Pradesh, particularly the Mon region, has always been known for harmony and serenity, the Governor appealed for upholding peace and tranquillity. He also advised the State government and district administration to put in extra effort to maintain law and order in Tawang.

Deputy Chief Minister Kameng Dolo, also the Minister in-charge of Home, prior to leaving for Tawang today to take stock of the situation, said that government will initiate action after a thorough inquiry. DGP in-charge Nabin Payeng also said that action against police personnel who resorted to firing will be taken after a magisterial and police inquiry.

Meanwhile, additional forces, comprising Army and other para-military forces, have been sent to the violence-hit district to restore law and order there, informed sources said.
