Puja pandal with unique decoration attracts crowds

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 4 Inflation has failed to dampen the spirit of puja enthusiasts and the Bhootnath Puja pandal in the city is a glaring example of this. The pandal is attracting visitors for its unique decoration with pulses, chillies and mustard.

Durga Puja is celebrated by the Bhootnath Durga Puja committee in a grand manner every year. This year the pandal has been given a different look. A multi-storied pandal, with an approximate height of more than 40 feet, has been decorated by foodgrains including pulses and mustard.

An estimated 1.5 MT of masur daal (red lentils), 250 kg of mustard seeds and 100 kg of dried red chillies have been used for pandal decoration. This unique eco-friendly initiative has been widely lauded by all sections of the society.

Besides this, the additional attraction in the Bhootnath Puja pandal is themoving idols of Goddess Durga and the demon Mahisasur. The electrical show, depicting the killing of Mahisasur by Durga is attracting huge crowds, especially children.

The creative teams constituted of experienced craftsmen from Kolkata and Chennai under the leadership of Montu Das of Kolkata, worked hard to make this eco-friendly creative pandal. Idols, however, have been made by artisans from Palashbari and Mirza in a very traditional way. The electric beautification was done by master electricians of Chandannagar, Kolkata. The theme of lighting is rural cultivation, and the pandal decorated with grains depicts the outcome of successful farming.

According to the organisers, another viewpoint behind the idea is that they wanted to put emphasis on the increasing prices of essential food items. The puja organisers also wanted to attract the government officials towards the lack of civic amenities in their area.

The area still lacks streetlights and proper drainage and people are facing immense trouble due to this. Absence of streetlights is helping in the growth of anti-social activities in the area, the organisers said.
