Puja clinches first gold for Assam

GUWAHATI, Jan 12 - Puja Basumatary won the first gold medal for Assam by defeating Sneha Chauhan of Uttarakhand in the U-17 57kg girls judo event at the 3rd edition of the Khelo India Youth Games here today.

Axita of Gujarat got the better of her state-mate Makwana Maheruk to secure the third spot.

Puja, who hails from Karbi Anglong had earlier represented India at the Commonwealth Judo Championship in London.

Another Assam girl Dharitri Sonowal had to be content with the silver as she went down against Nandani Vats of Delhi in the final of the U-17 girls category. Laishram Sanathoi Devi of Manipur ensured the bronze medal by defeating Shruti Uniyal of Rajasthan.

In athletics, Pinkhi Brahma with a throw of 44.24m won a bronze medal in the javelin throw event.
