Puja begins amidst tight security in Tripura

AGARTALA, Oct 2 � The Durga puja has come to the doorstep ending a year�s wait with puja organisers, decorators, light-men and dhakis preparing themselves to welcome the Goddess Durga in a big way in this hilly State of Tripura.

Over 600 community pujas will be organised across the State and of course the capital town � Agartala is all set to host 300 pujas.

The big budget puja pandals like Aiktan Yuba Sangstha, Yuba Samaj, Chittaranjan Club, Shanti Kami Sangha and Netaji Play Centre and Chhatrabandhu Club are expected to pull huge crowds during the festival.

While Aiktan Yuba Sangstha has made a pandal depicting a jungle full of wild animals, Shanti Kami Sangha has laid emphasis on global warming and its serious consequences. Netaji Play Centre and Chhatrabandhu Club are not far behind when it comes to attraction by constructing mammoth pandals and splendid illumination.

With ideal weather, organisers expect to catch record breaking pandal hoppers during the puja. �It is a fact that the situation has improved a lot in the field of law and order situation over years. Yet, we don�t want to take any risk and have taken all possible measures to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga puja�, said DIG (Control) NC Das here on Sunday.

Police will use modern gadgets like CCTVs and metal detectors to maintain strict vigil on the movement of suspected persons, he said adding that a strong contingent of Commandos of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) would be pressed into service. According to him, police have already started their duties to maintain law and order situation even in the rural areas to ensure peace.

To provide uninterrupted power, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has also begun buying extra power from Mizoram and Meghalaya. �We are buying around 70-80 MW power daily to reduce the shortage of power during the festival season�, said an official of TSECL.
