Pucca bridge over Gadadhar river demanded

By Correspondent

GAURIPUR, March 14 - The people of Khewarpar, Beguntoli, Thusipara, South Geramari, Dangirchar, Baghmara, Jaleralga and Dalsingeralga villages under Dhubri revenue circle and living on the eastern side of the Gadadhar river have decried the governments apathy over non-construction of a pucca bridge over the river connecting Gauripur to Beguntalighat along the NH 31.

More than one lakh people of the area have been demanding construction of a pucca bridge since a long time, but the government has paid no heed to their demand. A pucca bridge was constructed a few years back but the bridge failed to cater to the needs of the people as the bridge was constructed far away from their villages. The people of the area depended mostly on their livelihood at Gauripur and the students, teachers, employees of various departments have had to come to Gauripur and Dhubri as the entire area lacks high, higher secondary schools, college and hospitals. Moreover, the area is rich in cultivation and the cultivators usually come to sell their products at Gauripur market.

During the winter season, some leading people construct a bamboo bridge over the Gadadhar river connecting Gauripur town but in the summer season, poor people have to cross the river in country boats. It is worth mentioning that the entire area remains submerged by the floodwaters of the river and the entire area looks like an ocean. There have also been reports of drowning cases. People of the area alleged that neither the MLAs nor the MPs pay any heed to their vital problems of communication. They only visit the area during elections and assure them of fulfilling their long-standing demands, but miserably fail to relieve them of their grievances, they lamented.
