GUWAHATI, Nov 29 - The unparalleled and heroic military leadership of the great Assamese general Mahabir Lachit Borphukan was extolled at a public meeting held under the auspices of Hindu Yuva Sena at Jyotinagar here on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting as chief guest, senior journalist DN Chakravartty said Lachit Borphukan was one of the greatest military leaders of the mediaeval world.

He regretted that while great heroes and warriors of India like Maharana Pratap Singh, Chatrapati Shivaji and Tipu Sultan are worshipped throughout the country as great warriors, the great Lachit Borphukans achievements have been confined only to the boundaries of Assam.

He also criticised the failure of the Assamese historians, political writers and intellectuals in bringing Borphukan to the international landscape, saying that many well-known Assamese intellectuals with high academic degrees have failed to accord Borphukan his rightful place before the world community.

Former Assam DGP GM Srivastava who also addressed the meeting said the National Defence Academy had installed a statue of Borphukan on its campus, thanks to the efforts of former Assam Governor Lt Gen (retired) SK Sinha who took up the cause with the Union Defence Ministry.
