Public meet espouses ST cause of 6 communities

MORAN, Oct 19 � A public meeting was held here pertaining to the demand for ST status to six communities of Assam recently. The meet was organised by the Assam Tai Ahom Students� Union.

Dr Dayananda Borgohain, ex-HoD of Assamese, Moran College said that without granting of ST status to Ahom, Moran, Matak, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi and tea tribe communities, they would be lost. The infiltration problem will be solved if Assam is declared as a tribal State after the grant of ST status to the six communities, he added.

In the meeting, Gyanendra Phukan, ex-officer, Tai Jadughar, Sivasagar and Aswini Chetia, chief adviser, ATASU, central committee attended as chief guests and assured the student body of their full support in their struggle. In the open meeting, organised by the greater Tiliki Amguri branch, ATASU and Moran regional committee, Madan Chandra Rajkonwar, president, reception committee, presided over the meeting. Gourav Konwar, chief publicity secretary, Dibrugarh district committee of the ATASU delivered the welcome speech.

Pranjal Rajkumar, president, central committee, ATASU, Rubal Buragohain, president, Dibrugarh district committee, Khirod Saikia, general secretary, Chutia Students� Union, Ranjan Sen, president, Sivasagar district committee of the Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation, Ruhiteswar Borbora, senior engineer, Oil India at Moran, Nila Gogoi, principal, Lengeri College and others attended the meet as distinguished guests.

Earlier, the flag hoisting and maidam tarpan programme were conducted respectively by Tapan Boruah, president, Tiliki Aamguri branch of the ATASU and Mohan Chandra Rajkonwar.

Bhaskarjyoti Borgohain, forest officer, Khowang inaugurated the plantation progrmame. In connection with the occasion, folk dances of the Tai Ahom community were performed.

Biennial meet: The second biennial conference of the All Assam Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation, Sivasagar district committee, was held recently at the Moran Public Hall.

In the first day�s programme, after the flag hoisting, swahid yarpan and plantation programme were conducted by Prabal Dey, Biplob Kar and Ranjan Sen, president, secretary and vice president respectively of Sivasagar district unit of the Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation. In the evening, the delegates� meeting and subject selection meeting were held where a new executive panel of the Sivasagar district was formed with Ranjan Sen, president and Anup Bhoumick, Borhat as secretary.

The second day�s programme began with a cultural rally which was inaugurated by Ratna Chetia, president, Moran Town Committee. The open meeting in the evening was inaugurated by Dr Kamala Borgohain, HoD of Education of DU. Gautam Roy, Border Development Minister of Assam attended as chief guest in the meeting. Nirmal Kanti Shil, Central Committee, Sarat Saikia, MLA, Mahmora constituency, Khirud Saikia, Kalyani Devi, President�s award winning teacher and Dr Ashimav Dutta, lecturer, Moran College also attended the meeting. The cultural programme in the evening was inaugurated by Dr Anil Saikia, principal, Moran College.

Free health camp: Under the aegis of the Moran Oil India authority, Sivasagar district and in association with Moranhat Police station and Dirai Adarsha Village Guards� division, a free health camp was held recently at Dirai Adarsha ME School. After the camp, inaugurated by Naba Kumar Buragohain, officer incharge of Moranhat PS, a meeting was held under the presidentship of Tukheswar Gogoi, eminent social activist.

Journalist Basa Borah and administrative officer Anupam Konwar attended the meeting as distinguished guests. In the check up camp, Dr Liyon, physician, AMC, Dibrugarh, Dr Anshuman Choudhury, physician, Moran Oil India and Dr Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, Patsaku Hospital examined the patients.

Eye camp: An eye check up camp was held at Moran Town ME School recently under the aegis of the Moran Lions� Club. In the camp, 119 students got their eyes checked and treated. Shambhu More, office bearer of the health deptt of the Lions Club, Dr Pratap Sharma, Santosh Beria, Omprakash Sahu and others participated in the camp.
