Assam Assembly polls

GUWAHATI, Feb 26: Local organisations and outfits of Sivasagar have ‘requested’ the Raijor Dal to field the party’s supremo Akhil Gogoi from the Sibsagar constituency in the forthcoming Assembly polls.

“Local outfits and organisations of Sivasagar have sent us a request that Akhil Gogoi contest the Assembly elections from the Sibsagar constituency. However, as the Raijor Dal and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) have formally decided to fight the elections jointly, so both the parties will at an appropriate time together, declare which candidate will be fielded from which seat,” Raijor Dal working president Bhasco De Saikia said at a press conference here today.

He added that negotiations between the AJP and the Raijor Dal are at a final stage and some decision regarding seat sharing for the Assembly polls is likely to be announced within the next two-three days.

“In addition, we have also finalised our tie-up with the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC). We are also optimistic of entering into an alliance with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Talks with the BPF have so far been positive,” Saikia said.

Asked about the likelihood of the Congress party not fielding a candidate against Akhil Gogoi, he said, “That is an internal matter of the Congress.”

Saikia also cited reports of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to claim that the law-and-order situation in Assam is among the worst in the country.

“Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been the biggest failure as in-charge of the home department. Sonowal has no right to remain in charge of the home department,” said the senior Raijor Dal leader.
