Public closes Nazira-Geleki road for heavy vehicles

By ANN Service

SIVASAGAR, May 22 - People of Nazira, Bortal and Geleki region closed down the 15-km-long Nazira-Geleki road for heavy vehicles from 5 am of May 20 for an indefinite period in protest against the authoritys indifferent attitude towards public petitions for urgent repairing of the road, which has turned virtually into a pond with huge craters all over. The decision to close the road was taken by the Bortal Geleki Path Nirman Dabi Samity with Waliur Rahman as president and Rajen Sarmah as secretary on May 19. The committee had apprised the Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar about their decision through a memorandum earlier.

Debabrat Saikia, MLA Nazira and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly on Monday took stock of the situation in the the area arising out of deteriorating road communication. According to Rajen Sarmah, the PWD estimates for repairing the road is only about one-third of the amount that may actually be incurred under the prevailing conditions and hence the contractors showed no interest in starting the project.

The committee has urged the government to sanction adequate funds for the project to end the impasse on the vital road link with neighbouring Nagaland. The horrible road condition in the entire region has brought untold suffering for the commuters and the people of about 50 villages and tea estates.
