GUWAHATI, April 10 � The Pub-Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan is all set to organise its 50th Rongali Bihu celebrations with a scintillating array of programmes from April 14 onward. The event, to be held at the Assam Engineering Institute playground, will come to an end on April 17.
In a press meet held today, the president of the Sanmilan, Sanjeev K Laskar informed that this year the event would have �Peace and unity through culture� as its motto. As in previous years the celebrations would be broadcast live through satellite TV.
The Sanmilan�s flag would be ceremoniously hoisted by former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Birendranath Datta at 9.30 am on April 14. While the souvenir published on the occasion will be released by noted writer Dr Upen Rabha Hakasam, Inamur Rasul will lead the offering of tributes to martyrs. In the evening, eminent singer and academic, Lakhyahira Das will inaugurate the cultural programmes.
The cultural performances will bring in acclaimed artistes from the State and outside, and will also showcase the much admired artistes of yesteryears like Kula Barua, JP Das, Queen Das. Folk dances, Bihu dances and other attractions have been arranged to enhance the Bihu flavour.
A number of sports competitions will be part of the celebrations. Marathons, cycle races, and competitions for children are expected to draw large crowds. The women wing of the Sanmilan will organise a number of programmes from April 14, which include various song contests.
As in the past, Srestha Nasoni and Asam Bihuwoti contests will enthrall the audience. The two programmes will be held on April 15 and 16, and title winners will receive attractive awards.
