Protests against nod to Dibang Project

TINSUKIA, May 21 � Enraged over the green signal given to the proposed 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the district committee of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad staged a protest programme and burnt the effigy of Piyush Goyal, Union Power Minister of State (Ind) near its office at the GNB road here today. Protesters alleged that the Ministry had accorded environment clearance without taking into consideration the imminent danger to the environment as also danger to the life and properties of the people of the downstream areas. They further added that the project would endanger the life, properties and bio-diversity of the entire Tinsukia district and the AJYCP would at any cost fight against the construction of the big river dam.

Meanwhile, activists of Tinsukia Anchalik Chatra Santha staged a dharna programme against the clearance given to the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh. Activists burnt the effigies of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power Minister of State (Ind), Piyush Goyal at Thana Chariali here today. Protesters alleged that without proper assessments of the adverse affects on the environment of the downstream areas, the Union Gov-ernment has given consent to the project.
