TINSUKIA, July 15 - Responding to the bandh called by the Tinsukia district committee of the All Assam Bhojpuri Students Union, in protest against the killing of innocent persons at Bijulibon, Philobari by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) militants last night, enraged activists blocked the National Highway 37 and enforced closure of shops and other establishments at Doomdooma.

At Makum, too, protesters blocked both the NH-37 and NH-38 disrupting vehicular movement. Police had to resort to lathicharge on the unruly protesters who pelted stones on a police vehicle. In the melee, several protesters and security personnel, including the Makum Police Station officer in-charge Lalit Bora received injuries.

The protesters demanded safety and security to the life and property of the people and punishment to the culprits

involved in the incident.

As a precautionary measure, Sec 144 CrPC has been promulgated throughout the district. Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Puru Gupta and Dibrugarh MP Rameswer Teli visited the place of incidence and met the aggrieved people there.

It may be mentioned here that last night around 8.30 pm, 60-year-old Nandalal Shah, owner of a bicycle repairing shop, and his 18-year-old daughter Kajal Shah were killed and three others of his family his wife Manti Devi, son Manoj Shah and nephew Akshay Lal Shah were injured when motorcycle-borne miscreants opened fire on them in their house at Bijulibon under Pengeri Police Station.

Police have meanwhile picked up two persons in this connection.

According to reports, the motorbike-borne youths in black commando dress with faces covered came to Nandalals house and asked him to come out for talks. As soon as he came out, the miscreants fired from sophisticated weapons killing Nandalal and Kajol on the spot and injuring the others. The miscreants left the scene immediately.

The injured persons have been referred to the Assam Medical College Hospital at Dibrugarh from the Tinsukia Civil Hospital.
