By Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA, Dec 5 - A protest relating to the issue of compensation to the families of Nutangaon under Tinsukia Revenue Circle, who were affected by the Baghjan gas well blowout, took a violent turn today after the protesters from Nutangaon, mostly women who squatted on the Baghjan-Gotong Bridge, started pelting stones at a police team and a magistrate on duty there.

Police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters after magistrate Jaydeep Rajak received a head injury due to stone-pelting.

As many as 18 women protesters were taken into custody. The incident took place at around 11.30 am today.

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Shiladitya Chetia said the protesters also damaged a temporary police camp near the Gotong Bridge and attempted to block the production of Lumbuguri's Oil Collection Station on Friday night. However, the situation is still tense but under control, Chetia added.
