GUWAHATI, Dec 17 Student organizations and activists of other groups of Assam came together today to protest the recent killing of two school students in Chirang district and demanded immediate identification and punishment of the people responsible for the incident.
Hundreds of activists of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) held a three-hour protest demonstration outside the Rajbhavan here and demanded immediate halt to killings and other acts of violence against civilians by both the security forces and terrorist outfits.
Addressing the gathering, ABSU president Pramod Boro accused Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi of becoming arrogant and said constitutional rights of citizens were being violated and they were being subjected to state-backed terror.
Gogoi has agreed to a judicial enquiry on the Chirang killings, but there is no clarity who will conduct the enquiry, what will be its jurisdiction and time-frame. This is not the first incident of its kind. Over the years, there have been numerous such incidents but not even a single person has been punished, he said.
Boro demanded that the judicial enquiry should be conducted by a sitting judge and it should complete its work within December. The people have lost faith in the administration, he added.
Tribal Sangha general secretary Aditya Khaklari said that perpetrators of killing of innocents have always gone scot-free in Assam.
Even innocent kids and students are being now killed after being branded as terrorist If we all get united, then the government will be compelled to punish the culprits and prevent such incidents from being repeated, he said.
Samujjal Bhattacharjya, AASU advisor, said, Gogoi, being the head of the Unified Command in the State, cannot shirk his responsibility. The incident in Chirang has proved that Gogoi is responsible for both secret and open killings.
Stating that law and order in Assam has collapsed, he said that even members of the security forces are not safe as the recent execution of two unarmed jawans of the SSB in Baksa showed.
The event was also addressed by leaders of All Rabha Students Union, All Gorkha Students Union, Sonowal Kachari Students Union and other groups.
