SILCHAR, June 13 - At a time when Hindu�s are repeatedly killed in Bangladesh, the silence of the Bangladesh Government has raised serious concerns over the safety and security of Hindus in the country.
Expressing serious concerns over the recent developments, Separate Barak Demand Committee, an organisation based in Silchar, on Monday condemned the harassment meted out to the minority Hindus in the neighbouring nation.
Members of the committee along with some locals observed a one-day protest at the Khudiram Bose point on Monday. Criticising the recent killings of the Hindus the committee said that the instances are sheer violation of the fundamental rights to life and personal liberty. The committee believes that the process is totally politically and religiously motivated.
Shuvadip Dutta, general secretary of the committee, said that a memorandum was sent to the Prime Minister of India seeking his intervention on the issue. �The recent attacks on Hindu people in the country are similar to the recent killings of atheist bloggers and gay rights activists in the country by radical Islamists,� Dutta said.
He added that the minority community in the neighbouring is desperately waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the issue with his Bangladesh counterpart as if India does not exert pressure on the country to take action against the fundamentalist, they will not budge. Also, the Indian Government must take up the matter with the office of United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights. Further, the Government should take proper steps to bring kind notice to all the Islamic countries in the world to condemn the ongoing incidents during the holy month of Ramdan, Dutta said.
On the other hand, expressing strong reactions against the killing of Hindus in that country, members of Hindu Legal Cell of Cachar district committee also sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Deputy Commissioner Cachar seeking his intervention in the matter and initiate talks with his Bangladesh counterpart to end the harassment.
Dharmananda Deb, State convener of the cell, said, �We feel that the Government of Bangladesh has not been active enough to protect the life and property of Hindus for which our Government must intervene before another Hindu is brutally killed. The Hindus are reportedly attempting to leave the country to save their lives which is why we request before the government to allow them to enter India during this hour of crisis.�
