NEW DELHI, Feb 6 The Assam Students Association, Delhi today staged demonstration against the BJP, demanding the resignation of all MPs of the saffron party of the North East in protest against the use of the term immigrants for the people of North East.
The demonstrators particularly vented their anger against Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for repeatedly calling people from the region migrants.
The demonstrations, held at Jantar Mantar, saw the students, mostly studying in
Delhi University, display placards: North East is an integral part of India, No one is
superior and no one is inferior, We are all equal,
Assam is burning and North East is hurt.
Former Congress MP, Kirip Chaliha, who came to express his solidarity with the demonstrators, told newsmen, It cannot be a printing error, because when a national political party calls us immigrants, then it has to be taken seriously as it speaks about their mindset, he said.
When Nirmala Sitharaman calls us migrants then she has to clarify whether she is a migrant, too. Can she dare to call people of Bihar, West Bengal and other States living in Delhi, migrants, he asked.
The North East will burn unless BJP changes its mindset, Chaliha said, adding that the BJP has so far did not punish whosoever was guilty for the goof-up.
Any racial slur is a criminal offence, an agitated Chaliha said.
