Protest against Zoii Nath Sarmas candidature

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, March 12 - The Rajiv Bhawan campus here turned into a wrestling ground for a few moments on Thursday as a few Congress workers led by the president of the Darrang District Congress Committee, Debobrat Dutta had to physically drive away a section of his fellow party men from Sipajhar from the campus.

The District Congress president became furious when hundreds of people, both male and female, identifying themselves as Congress workers from Sipajhar LAC, staged a protest in front of the Rajiv Bhawan against the news of granting party ticket to Dr Zoii Nath Sharma, a former AGP Minister from Sipajhar LAC. The aggrieved Congress workers also burnt Dr Sharmas effigy and shouted slogans against the offer of the party ticket to him. They alleged that the grassroot-level Congress workers were harassed by the former AGP MLA and Minister while in power for 20 years in the LAC.

It may be mentioned here that apart from Dr Sharma, former MP Madhab Rajbongshi, senior advocate Jibon Barua young businessman Kuldip Barua and Satyarani Kalita are also in the fray for the party ticket from the Sipajhar LAC, from where the present MLA, formerly a Congress candidate, is contesting on a BJP ticket.
