GUWAHATI, June 1 - Members of the Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees Engineer and Pensioners (CCOEEEP) today observed protest day against the �proposed Draft Electricity Amendment Bill-2020� across the State wearing black badges and organising protest demonstrations in front of their respective offices.
The central committee of CCOEEEP staged a protest shouting slogans at Bijulee Bhawan here from 10 am to 11 am. They also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard.
�The Central government has been undertaking anti- people policies one after another taking advantage of the lockdown when everybody is very seriously worried about the novel coronavirus pandemic. The whole world is under tremendous threat in this crisis period and the action taken by the Central government is not acceptable,� Tapan Sarma, general secretary of CITU said in his speech.
In a statement, CCOEEEP said that in this crisis period the employees have rendered service in all possible ways to serve the people providing uninterrupted power.
�The proposed Draft Electricity Amendment Bill-2020 aims to privatise the power sector of India in the interest of private companies and MNCs and it is detrimental to the interest of the nation and against the Indian Constitution also,� the statement said.
�The proposed bill will abolish the subsidy and cross-subsidy in the tariff and it will also hike price and severely affect the poor consumers and farmers. The creation of Electricity Contract Enforcement Authority (ECEA) will dilute the stand of the Central and state electricity regulatory commissions,� the statement added.
The protest day was also observed in Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Barpeta, Silchar, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Mangaldoi, Tezpur and North Lakhimpur.s
