Protest against presence of insects in midday meals at Laluk

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 8 - The Laluk regional unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) protested on the NH-15 on Thursday, at Laluk in Lakhimpur district against the reported presence of insects and pests in the midday meal by served by an NGO for schools there. Large insects like cockroaches and dragonflies were found in the khichidi served by an NGO designated by the State-sponsored MDM Scheme in Laluk HS School on Thursday.

As the incident became widely-known, the Laluk AASU took strong exception to the incident and took out a protest march on NH-15 near Laluk Police Station. The protesting AASU members led by its secretary Dibyajyoti Gogoi also burnt the effigy of Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. Later, they handed over the food items to Lalauk Police Station and lodged a complaint against the NGO.

The Socialist Unity Centre of India-Communist (SUCI-C) today took out a sit-in protest in North Lakhimpur against the State government�s decision in contracting the midday meal schemes to NGOs in the schools. The SUCI-C cadres, holding placards in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office in North Lakhimpur today shouted slogans demanding the retention of the previous system of running the MDM schemes with cooks appointed by the State. They demanded cancellation of the contract given to the NGOs to run the MDM schemes in the schools of Assam in the protest while retaining the services of the appointed cooks with an increased salary.
