KALAIGAON, June 14 - A public meeting was held at Orang recently in which representatives from various social and student organisations protested against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, as well as the brutal killing of two Assamese youths in Karbi Anglong and demanded fast-track trial of the accused.
The meeting, jointly organised by the All Assam Journalists� Union (AAJU), Udalguri district committee, and the Orang Press Club was held at the Orang Sahitya Sabha Bhawan.
Representatives of various organisations � including Asam Sahitya Sabha, AASU, AJYCP, AGSU, AKRSU, ABMSU, AASAA � and senior citizens attended the meet presided over by Nagendra Chandra Bhuyan, president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Mazbat branch.
AAJU president Pankaj Kumar Nath, who was the chief guest at the event, said the citizenship Bill would deal a severe blow to the identity of ethnic groups in Assam and the North East. He accused the BJP governments at the Centre and in the State of working against the interests of the people of Assam by adopting a �dividing policy�.
The AAJU president asked Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to clarify his stand on the Assam Accord, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the citizenship Bill.
AAJU central committee secretary Nakul Talukdar, journalist Anjan Goswami, former AASU leader Lalit Deka, former principal of Orang HS School Khagen Deka, and Udalguri District Journalists� Union president Jayanta Das also spoke on the occasion.
