Protest against land ordinance today

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 4 Blaming the Narendra Modi-led Union government for attempting to snatch away the farmers rights over their land through the land ordinance, the Assam State Kisan Sabha, CITU Assam, Joint Council of Trade Unions, Assam, and many other like-minded organisations will stage a protest at Dighalipukhuripar tomorrow.

Alleging that the ordinance ignores the genuine concerns of the farmers and lakhs of people dependent on land, the organisations said that it is not just the farmers who would be affected by the ordinance, but 31.9 per cent of agricultural land would become also non-cultivable.

We cannot tolerate such an anti-farmer stand of the government in the name of development. If this ordinance becomes an Act, most of the farmers of the country, who do not have land patta, will have to lose their land to the rich and the mighty, said a statement.

Other organisations supporting the May 5 protest are the Students Federation of India, Democratic Youth Federation of India, All India Democratic Womens Association, Guwahati Mahanagar Unnayan Samity and Janajati Adhikar Mancha.
