Protest against GMDA notification on Dimoria

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Jan 5 - Activists of All India Kishan Sabha today staged a sit-in demonstration near the Jorabat Tiniali junction against the GMDA notification to include the greater Dimoria region under the Sonapur Revenue Circle in the GMDA jurisdiction by extending the eastern boundary of the Guwahati city. The farmers body has a series of demands and its members shouted slogans against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, GMDA and local MLA Akon Bora.

The Kishan Sabha demands include cancellation of the GMDA notification, land pattas to local and indigenous people of Dimoria, halt to the process of providing agricultural land in the Dimoria region for industrial and commercial purposes, protection of tribal belts in the Dimoria region and a GMDA white paper as to why the Dimoria region is being considered to be brought under the GMDA without proper public consultation.

The Kishan Sabha activists warned of intensifying the agitation if their demands were not met. The protest ended after the executive members of the body submitted a memorandum to the State Government through the Circle officer of Sonapur Revenue Circle, Munindra Nath Ngatey.

It may be noted that various regional and tribal organisations have protested against the GMDA notification on earlier occasions too, but the issue has not been amicably resolved till date.
