Protest against death of 2 persons in firing

By Correspondent

TEZPUR, Feb 16 Sensation prevails in the Patiachuburi area near here under the Kocharigaon police outpost following the killing of two persons of the village by a jawan of 12 Assam Rifles around 10 pm last night.

Sources said that Kornil Singh Kapur, a jawan of 12 AR stationed at Mission Chariali here, with some of his colleagues, as usual went to the residence of one Gautam Das of Patiachuburi village yesterday to consume country liquor.

After getting drunk, the jawans got into a quarrel with Das and then left the spot in a jiffy.

However, around 9.45 last night, Kapur, accompanied by some other jawans, again came to Das house and picked up where he had left off. But this time, the heated argument reached such a pass that Kapur fired from his service rifle at Das and one of his neighbours, Benu Das, killing them instantly. In the firing, Gautam Das wife Jinu also sustained serious bullet injury. She has since been admitted to the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital.

The jawan, on the other hand, surrendered at the Tezpur police station after committing the crime.

Today, the people of the area, while blaming it on the sale of illegal country liquor and uninhibited coming of Army jawans to the area to consume liquor, gheraoed the Tezpur police station demanding severe punishment to the accused jawan.
