Prospect of herbal plants highlighted

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 1 Noted herbal practitioner Dr Gunaram Khanikar, who was recently presented an international award by the Economic Growth Society of India at the International Achievers Summit at Bangkok, has underlined the tremendous value of medicinal plants in Assam.

In his acceptance speech, made available to the media, Dr Khanikar said Assam possesses great scope for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants on account of favourable agro-climatic conditions. He pointed out that such plants have rapidly gained importance due to almost zero side effects, low cost and therapeutic use.

He added that he had treated a large number of patients, who responded well to herbal medicines. Among the diseases for which herbal medication worked are heart ailments, gastritis, rheumatism, kidney stone, sinusitis and insomnia.

In his view there was a need to create an international common platform for all herbal practitioners and researchers to enable sharing of knowledge. Such a move, he said, would promote herbal medicines and create more public awareness.
